Jewellery Making Experiences

Learn to make jewellery in an intimate setting in Vanessa and Toms jewellery workshop in Birmingham's historic Jewellery Quarter.
Classes run throughout the year and are private with numbers limited to a class size of 2 learners at one time. There are classes available for 1-1 tuition or you can bring a friend along and learn together. We also run 1 day weekend wedding ring workshops. All classes include complementary teas, coffees and biscuits!

About the Experience:
​
Our classes are suitable for complete beginners with no previous jewellery making
experience and for those who have some previous experience.
​
Short Workshops
All our workshops are aimed at beginners. With full step-by-step
guidance you will experience making a specific piece of jewellery
such as a ring, a bangle or a pendant with the materials provided.
​
Wedding Workshop
Create your own unique and beautiful wedding rings from silver or
gold with full support of both Vanessa and Tom. Spend a day in
the workshop hand crafting your own special wedding bands
learning to shape, solder, texture and finish.
Christmas Workshops
From November onwards we offer a seasonal workshop.

About the Tutors:

Vanessa Miller

Alongside running her own jewellery business, Vanessa has successfully planned and delivered regular jewellery making classes from beginner through to advanced learners at the Midlands Arts Centre for adults and young people for over 4 years. Prior to this Vanessa planned and delivered jewellery making classes for the Crafts Council project 'Make Your Future' for 3 years in Secondary Schools across Birmingham and has taught specialist jewellery classes at the School of Jewellery as a Visiting Tutor. Vanessa is a graduate of the School of Jewellery where she studied Jewellery and Silversmithing (HND) full time and returned as an Artist in Residence for 2 consecutive years. Following this Vanessa won an award and was named Jeweller in Residence after entering a design competition set by the Museum of the Jewellery Quarter Birmingham, her exclusive Snake Collection inspired by the museums archives is exclusively available from the Museum shop.
Tom Asquith
Tom is a graduate of Wolverhampton University where he studied 3D applied Art (BA) and continued his training in Jewellery and silversmithing at Bishopsland. He developed his design and business skills at Design Space Birmingham and has won many awards for his craft. He was an Artist in Residence and technician at the School of Jewellery Birmingham where he supported student learning. Tom works for a Birmingham company full time as a silversmith and runs his own business too.

Workshop Location and Access and Health and Safety.
​
The Workshop is located on Spencer Street in the Jewellery Quarter Birmingham UK. We are located on the first floor via a spiral staircase with a handrail. We regret there is no lift access.
​
Parking is available in the area, free after 6pm, pay and display though out the day, there are some limited free all day parking and short stay (4 hour) free bays available within the Jewellery Quarter if you are lucky to find one. Public transport links are excellent. Buses stop very close by, and we are a short walking distance away from the Jewellery Quarter tram stop. The workshop is also a 20 minute straight walk from the city centre.

Classes are for adults over the age of 17 only.
The classes will require some standing for certain activities and physical work.
​
Please be aware all classes we offer are a practical activity and although rare sometimes minor injuries such as cuts can occur.
​
COVID-19 SAFE- Please provide your own face mask. Face masks are no longer mandatory and you are welcome to wear one throughout your class. There is handwashing and alcohol hand gel available within the workshop.
​
The workshop is a small space and therefore restricted to a maximum of 4: 2 tutors and 2 students at any one time.
It is recommended you wear an apron as workshops can be a dirty environment, you may bring your own or wear the aprons we supply which are laundered after each workshop.
If you wear glasses please remember to bring them with you.
Long hair must be tied back securely.

Low heeled, firm shoes must be worn such as trainers - flip flops, sandals, open shoes and soft cloth shoes cannot be worn in the workshop and will mean your class cannot go ahead if you do not have alternative footwear.
​
Sanitised and reusable eye protection and disposable ear protection where necessary will be provided.
You may wish to bring a pen and notebook to the sessions for note taking if you wish.
​
Photography is welcome and we ask if shared on social media please tag us @thejewellerspeg #thejewellerspegclasses #thejewellerspeg. In certain circumstances we reserve the right to refuse photography. We may on occasion wish to take photographs of participants (you) in the workshop for use online, for social media and print. We will ask your verbal permission before taking such photos and will share photos with you after the session.

Reviews: after your session we would love to receive your feedback and will send you a link to write a review, you may of course prefer to email us, please give us permission to use your review across our socials, online and printed material.

COURSE CANCELLATION POLICY

*FOR WEDDING RING WORKSHOP POLICY & CANCELLATIONS SEE BELOW

Full refunds can be up to 14 days prior to your booking. No refunds issued after this date your account will be credited to spend online at Vanessa Miller Jewellery and The Jewellers Peg. A course rescheduled cannot be refunded at all if then subsequently cancelled.
Classes are for adults over the age of 17 only.
Changes to course dates:
If we need to amend or postpone your class due to our reasons such as a tutor illness or inaccessible workshop, extreme heatwave etc, we will reschedule your class when the workshop is available to suit all participants where 2 people have booked on. We will give you as much notice as we can (please ensure we have your up-to-date mobile phone/email details at booking). We regret we cannot be held responsible for the cost of pre-booked travel and accommodation arrangements.
Refunds & Transfers:
Please ensure you can attend before you book a place. Our classes including Special Event Workshops run for a minimum of 2 hours or 1 day or as specified in the course description.
If you do wish to cancel your course you may do so as stipulated above.
Rescheduling classes is only possible if the workshop is available for use on days requested. If 2 people are booked onto a course rescheduling can only occur if both parties agree with date(s) offered by us and we ty to be as flexible as we can around our other non-movable commitments. Rebooking is at our discretion and cannot be refunded at all if subsequently cancelled.
This policy excludes wedding ring workshops.
*WEDDING RING WORKSHOP POLICY AND CANCELLATIONS
To reserve your place please confirm and reserve your chosen date by booking and paying for (reserving) the workshop*. If you want to make your rings in silver this is included in this fee, if you want to make your rings in gold you will need to pay for your materials within 7 days of receiving the invoice; due to fluctuating metal prices, if after 7 days your invoice for materials remains outstanding it will be cancelled and will need to be recalculated this will incur an admin fee of £20 (our time for recalculating material costs and reinvoicing you). We do not hold stock of gold therefore if your invoice for materials remains unpaid on 3 attempts we reserve the right to cancel your workshop with no refund. -Please speak to me if you are experiencing difficulties paying for your materials!
If you cancel your wedding ring making workshop it is non-refundable and non-transferable

*Before booking your wedding ring making workshop please ensure it is at least 2 months ahead of your wedding date. Also, if you have a specific request for band thickness, shape, material you communicate this (pictures are always helpful) prior to booking your workshop, so we know what you hope to make and can advise if achievable to avoid disappointment on the day. We can provide a rough estimated price for your gold ahead of you reserving your workshop date. For a more accurate price you and your partner will need to come to the workshop to have your ring size measured and a price will be calculated and emailed to you (see next paragraph). If you cannot come to the workshop for measuring a plastic 'multi-sizer' will be sent to you to measure your wedding finger (fourth finger on your left hand in western countries) at home or you can ask a local jewellery shop to measure you both.

If you cancel your wedding ring workshop within 24 hours of booking you will receive a full refund. After 24 hours it is assumed you are happy to proceed, I will then calculate the price of your material and invoice you for this as explained above. Once materials are paid for your booking is then fully firmed and your workshop is to proceed on the day you have booked.

ANY pandemic:
Any pandemic, local or world event, where a cancellation is necessary due to government enforced lockdown, shielding or you require to self-isolate please ensure you get in touch with your tutor/Vanessa Miller via telephone (0121663 6696) or email ASAP so we can make arrangements to rebook. As a small independent business we would prefer to avoid refunding and would prefer to rebook, although refunds will be offered where there is no other option.
If we should need to cancel for any reason we will try our very best to offer rescheduled dates that suit you / both participants, where this is not possible we will offer a refund.
